Wave placement was determined  for each racer by his/her bib#, but in a few instances, the cutoff between the elite male, elite female, and first waves was not obvious by bib number alone. For example, in 2002, 2003 and 2004, bibs numbered 1-220 were reserved for the elite men’s freestyle race, and the first wave started with bib 221. However, there was an excess of elite male racers in 2003, necessitating assignment of unused elite female elite bib #s in the range 1001-1147 to elite male racers. Other than this unusual situation, there was little confusion placing skiers in elite, first, and subsequent waves using bib#.
